article summary —

Now here’s a little gem. The Irish long distance bus company Bus Éireann is offering special fares to users of the messaging website Twitter. But we are happy to divulge the details here so that readers of hidden europe notes can benefit from this splendid offer. For the princely sum of 2 EUR devotees of Twitter (and others who merely affect to be dedicated Twitterers) can travel from Donegal to Dublin, Waterford to Cork or Galway to Shannon. More details on http://webhe.eu/bus. The offer lasts to the end of this month. And useful, too, in a country that is sadly lacking in cross-country train services – indeed Donegal has no trains at all.

Thank you Nicky and Susanne for that information.

I don't use Twitter but do have friends in Donegal so that is a very good deal.
Yes Donegal once had an abundance of narrow gauge lines and two standard gauge lines but these were closed about 50 years ago.

A small section of the County Donegal Railway at Lough Finn has re-opened as a heritage line using one of the original rail-bus cars.

    Tom.
