Georgian hospitality

by hidden europe

Summary

A onetime showpiece hotel of the Soviet era, the Iveria in Tbilisi, was transformed into a vertical refugee camp. We find out why.

As the first guests check into Radisson's smart new hotel in the centre of Tbilisi, when it opens its doors to the public in spring next year, few will immediately appreciate the history associated with the spot on which the hotel stands - a prime piece of real estate on Republic Square.

For the new showpiece hotel is on the site of former Hotel Iveria which was, for many years, the most colourful accommodation option for travellers to Tbilisi.
