Summary

We explore the prospects for new ferry services in the Mediterranean linking Europe with Libya.

With peace happily now returning to Libya after the civil war, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for entrepreneurial operators to create new ferry routes across the Mediterranean to Libyan ports. When Muammar Gaddafi came to power in 1968, many long-standing ferry routes to Libya continued to operate. The autumn 1971 schedules used in preparing the preceding article show passenger services from Turkey, Greece, Tunisia, Italy and Malta to Tripoli. Libya’s second city of Benghazi had a service every ten days to Naples with stops in Malta and Sicily.
