Summer is the main season for pilgrimages in many parts of Europe. Some Catholic shrines are year-round destinations and command an international appeal. Good examples are three sites where it is alleged that Marian apparitions took place: Lourdes (France), Fátima (Portugal) and Medugorje (Bosnia).
Yet there are dozens of other shrines in Europe that really come spectacularly to life only on certain feast days.
