Crossing the North Sea

by hidden europe

Ferry operators Smyril Line and Fjord Line merge - and one of the most historic North Sea crossings disappears.

North Sea ferry services are suddenly in a state of unusual turmoil with the news in mid October that two main operators are to merge and that the sole remaining regular passenger ferry connection between Germany and England is to close.

The Faroese based operator Smyril Line has courted Norway’s Fjord Line for a while, and despite Smyril Line’s heavy indebtedness following its acquisition of the new Norröna ferry, all now looks set for the two operators to merge. Bergen based Fjord Line has routes from Bergen to both Newcastle (England) and to Hanstholm (Denmark).
