Europe's steepest road

by hidden europe

Summary

the road signs warn of a gradient of forty per cent. We track down an improbably steep hill on the Welsh coast

Of course Europe's highest roads (compare our feature in this same issue) are not the same as Europe's steepest roads. While many climbs in the Alps are prolonged, few can match the steepness of the short sharp hills found in other parts of Europe. We believe that the steepest paved public road anywhere in Europe may well be in Harlech on the west coast of Wales.
