The November rain lashed against the windows of the Caffè San Marco. A trio of besuited businessmen huddled in the doorway of the café and plotted a strategy for onward progress along the Via Cesare Battisti without getting drenched. Hopping from one doorway to the next is an art in which Triestini excel.
On dry days the Caffè San Marco is a place for poets, poseurs, professors and philosophers. On wet days like this, everyone tumbles into the San Marco and the café becomes a Noah's Ark for all Trieste life.
